An initial inquiry has revealed that the multi-story building that collapsed in Ofankor, located in the Greater Accra Region last week, did not possess the required permit.
The oversight of the project fell to a caretaker named Maxwell, as the primary owner resided outside the region.
The Ga North Municipal Authority Engineer was made aware of the ongoing construction at a specific location.
Upon arrival at the site, the Ga North team halted construction at the first-floor level and requested a structural integrity report. This report was essential for either obtaining a permit or considering demolition.
Regrettably, the project failed to furnish the necessary report, and construction continued surreptitiously during nighttime and weekends within a gated compound.
Finally, on Friday, September 22, 2023, the Ga North Municipal Engineers, led by the Head of Works, Ing Boampong Afrifa, managed to gain access to the previously inaccessible site.
They uncovered severe structural deficiencies, including a significant sinking of the building.
Upon being informed of these critical structural issues, the caretaker grew alarmed and contacted the main owner, urging the evacuation of items from the premises.
During the evacuation process, the building collapsed suddenly, resembling a pancake collapse.
This is SERIOUS.
