WASSCE: 86 mobile phones seized from candidates – WAEC

John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has revealed that 86 mobile devices were confiscated from candidates taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, he disclosed that this incident occurred at Otoo Memorial SHS in Bibiani, Western North Region, where 86 mobile phones were retrieved from the students.

Kapi explained that intelligence indicated that candidates were instructed to bring their phones to the exam halls so they could be contacted since unauthorized websites couldn’t access WAEC’s questions.

He emphasized that the scripts of candidates found in possession of cell phones would be invalidated, and subject results for those with photocopies of questions would also be canceled. Additionally, supervisors involved in malpractices would face legal consequences.

WAEC expressed dissatisfaction with numerous malpractices during the ongoing WASSCE, including electronic smuggling, question leakage, and impersonation.

The National Intelligence Bureau and the Police had apprehended numerous students, impersonators, and invigilators involved in trading questions for money.

Mr. Kapi stated during a press briefing on the 2023 WASSCE, “We are tallying the cases, and the numbers are overwhelming. We are categorizing them to identify students, teachers, and supervisors involved in these activities.

We’ve received reports from various schools, including Otoo Memorial SHS, Mountain High SHS, Adu Gyamfi SHS, Only Believe SHS, Christian IPS, and Ideal College. More reports are coming in, and we are systematically addressing them.”
