Judges are akin to umpires, and much like umpires, they do not craft the rules; instead, they apply and enforce them. Their role, both for umpires and judges, is pivotal, ensuring that all participants adhere to the established regulations. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that spectators seldom attend a sporting event with the primary intention of watching the umpire in action.
In a similar vein, Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmann fulfills the role of a rule enforcer, making sure that the rules are upheld. However, she’s more than just an enforcer; she is a prominent figure that many eagerly anticipate.
Dr. Kaufmann is renowned as the Quiz Mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), a prestigious position she has held since 2006.
Born on September 7, 1969, she hails from the intellectually vibrant region of Assin in central Ghana. Her educational journey commenced at Aburi Girls Senior High School in the Eastern Region, specifically Beposo Han.
Dr. Kaufmann chose to pursue her tertiary education in the United States, where she successfully completed her university studies at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a Ph.D. in Bioengineering.
Following this, she spent three years at Rutgers University in the USA, working as a postdoctoral fellow and founding director of the Cell Biology Laboratory at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials.
Her contributions to Ghana are considerable, encompassing roles on the board of the National Nuclear Research Institute and participation in the pioneering technical advisory committee on medical devices for the Food and Drugs Authority. She has also been involved with the Ghana Standards Authority Technical Committee on Metrology and Measurements.
She presently serves on the board of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and the councils of the Ghana Communication Technology University. Dr. Kaufmann previously held the position of President for the Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers and has been honored with numerous awards, a testament to her remarkable achievements.
One of her most prominent roles, both nationally and internationally, has been as the host Quiz Mistress of the renowned National Science and Maths Quiz Competition since 2006. This esteemed position has brought her considerable recognition and acclaim.
In a recent development, Professor Elsie Akosua Effah Kaufmann, not only the distinguished NSMQ Quiz Mistress but also the Dean of Engineering at the University of Ghana, was a guest on the radio talk show “Star Chat” on Starr FM, airing on Thursday night, November 2, 2023.
