Six students have been placed in police custody by the Bolgatanga District Court following allegations of assaulting a friend.

The accused individuals, whose identities are being withheld, are aged 17, 18, 18, 18, 19, and 20. They face charges on two counts, including conspiracy to commit assault and actual assault, in violation of section 84 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Chief Inspector Francis Tamanja, the prosecutor, informed the court that the complainant, also a student residing in Sawaba, a suburb of Bolgatanga, received a phone call from one of the accused on September 30, 2023. The call alleged that she was involved in a romantic relationship with her boyfriend.

The complainant was instructed to meet the accused at St Joseph Guest House in Bolgatanga to discuss the matter. Upon their meeting, one of the accused deemed the location unsuitable for their discussion and proposed reconvening at the Mobile Astro Turf Park, also in Bolgatanga, at 4:30 pm on the same day.

Unaware that the caller had already organized the other accused to be present, the complainant arrived at the Mobile Astro Turf Park and was assaulted and severely beaten for allegedly having an affair with one of their boyfriends.

The prosecutor disclosed that the accused individuals recorded the incident and later shared it on social media platforms. Fortunately, the complainant received assistance from members of the Dangwoe community, who promptly transported her to the hospital for medical attention.

Subsequently, the complainant reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest and subsequent arraignment of the accused persons in front of the court.

Their pleas were not taken, and they were subsequently remanded into police custody by the presiding judge, Sumaila Mbache Ahamudu.

The case is scheduled to continue its hearing on Monday, October 9, 2023.
