UTAG wants to clarify that the National Research Fund’s implementation should not serve as a substitute for the crucial Book and Research Allowance (BRA).
The BRA is an essential part of the employment conditions for UTAG members, and its disbursement for the already completed 2022/2023 academic year has been unreasonably delayed, causing distress among many lecturers in public universities.
“In response to this situation, UTAG has called on the Government to ensure that all UTAG members receive their BRA by October 21st to prevent any disruption to industrial harmony.”
“Additionally, UTAG has expressed its disapproval of the recent media attacks in the country, deeming these actions detrimental to the national interest.”
“The UTAG Congress has observed with concern the growing attacks on freedom of expression and the media. Such actions run counter to the principles of our evolving democratic system, as enshrined in Chapter 12 of Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.”
“As a result, UTAG has urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly apprehend and prosecute those responsible for these acts of violence.”
“While condemning these acts of violence and lawlessness, UTAG has commended the police for their swift response in apprehending individuals who recently assaulted journalists and panelists at United Television (UTV).”
“The Inspector General of Police (IGP) is called upon to ensure that all perpetrators of attacks on journalists, including the incident involving Citi FM journalists, attacks on media houses, and the killings of journalists in the country, are arrested and brought to justice without exception.”
