In February of 2022, Parliament approved a whopping €350 million for the construction of a bridge over the Afram River and the construction of over 120km of roads in the Afram area.

The project is aimed at enhancing the productivity of the agriculture sector in the Afram Plains, improving the well-being of its inhabitants, and boosting the food security of the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra area.

The Chairman of the Committee on Roads and Transport, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, emphasized the vital role that accessibility to road infrastructure plays in poverty reduction, fostering regional integration, and enhancing economic development.

He pointed out that agriculture accounts for one-fifth of Ghana’s GDP and employs half of the workforce, serving as the main source of livelihood for the majority of its citizens.

Therefore, the transport sector is essential to agriculture, providing services and developing road links for the transportation of farm produce to market centers and for export markets.

The Afram Plains District has tremendous potential to contribute significantly to the improvement of its inhabitants’ well-being and the food security of the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra area.

The project aims to unlock this potential and enhance productivity in the agriculture sector of the Afram Plains.

The House also approved a commercial contract agreement between the Government of Ghana and Contracta Construction UK Limited for the construction of the Bunso-Adawso Road and specified approach roads to the Adawso Bridge Project 9104km.

The project comprises Takorowatwen – Ekyi Amanfrom Road – 22Km, Adawso – Kwahu Tafo Road – 20Km, Kwahu Tafo – Miaso Road – 29Km, Miaso – Begoro Road – 26Km, and Begoro – Obuho Road – Km.

Additionally, a design-build contract agreement between Ghana and BNIP-Janson-Adowso Consortium of Netherlands for the construction of a bridge over the Volta River at Adawso-Ekyi Amanfrom was approved for €200 million.

Despite the approval of the project by Parliament over a year ago, there has been no sign of construction commencement, causing concern among the people.

The delay in the commencement of construction is worrisome and has led to many questions about the government’s commitment to the project’s implementation.

It is essential that the government takes swift action to commence construction and ensure that the project is completed within the proposed timeline.

The project’s success will have a significant impact on the development of the Afram Plains, the improvement of the well-being of its inhabitants, and the country’s economy at large.

The people are counting on the government to deliver on its promises and improve their livelihoods.
