Upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse in Ghana

Upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse in Ghana

An annular solar eclipse is a rare celestial event that occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the Moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun’s.

As a result, during the eclipse, the Sun appears as a bright ring, or annulus, around the Moon.

This phenomenon can only be seen from a narrow path on the Earth’s surface, which is why annular solar eclipses are considered rare. The path of the 2027 annular solar eclipse will pass through parts of Africa, including Ghana, as well as parts of South America, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Ocean.

In Ghana, the eclipse is expected to begin 2nd August, 2027 at around 4:50 AM local time and end at around 7:15 AM local time. The maximum point of the eclipse, where the Sun will appear as a ring, will occur at around 5:58 AM local time.

As with any solar eclipse, it is important to take precautions when viewing the event to avoid damage to your eyes.

Looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. Special eclipse glasses or filters, or indirect viewing methods, such as using a pinhole camera, should be used to safely view the eclipse.

The 2027 annular solar eclipse in Ghana is expected to be a rare and exciting event for skywatchers and astronomers alike.

It is an opportunity to witness the beauty and wonder of our solar system and the cosmos as a whole.
