The Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), in conjunction with the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), has issued a stern ultimatum, giving the government a two-week deadline to reinstate their withheld allowances.
These allowances, the non-payment of which has placed considerable financial strain on their members, must be reinstated by October 15, 2023, as stipulated by the unions.
During a press conference held in Accra, Dr. Beth Offei-Awuku, the National President of GAUA, emphasized the severe hardships that the non-payment of these allowances has inflicted upon their members.
The union president also stressed that should their demands not be met within the stipulated timeframe, they will regrettably be compelled to initiate a withdrawal of services in all public universities across the nation.
In a related development, Organized Labour is advising its members to adhere to proper procedures when planning demonstrations or protests, which include seeking approval from the police.
Mr. Joshua Ansah, Deputy Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), underscored the importance of complying with the law and noted that they typically notify the police about their planned demonstrations at least five days in advance. He expressed confidence that, provided all necessary arrangements are in place, the police should grant approval for their demonstrations or strikes, as they are a law-abiding organization.
