Soldiers allegedly brutalize residents due a reported mob killing of a soldier in Ashaiman.

Following the alleged killing of a soldier over the weekend in Ashaiman, the Taifa neighbourhood was forced into a self-imposed curfew on Tuesday dawn, as some soldiers reportedly stormed the area.

The soldier was reportedly attacked and stabbed by a gang and was on his way to his family home when the incident occurred. Photos and videos of the lifeless body of the victim, in military camouflage colours, were shared on social media.

Eyewitnesses have recounted their experiences on social media, stating that alleged soldiers numbering not less than 20 questioned anyone they came across and reportedly beat them up. This led to people locking themselves up in their homes, fearing they would be beaten up by the soldiers. Vehicles passing by were stopped, male passengers dragged out, and beaten up with soldiers allegedly saying “you people kill our colleague.”

Some eyewitnesses reported soldiers knocking on doors and anybody who came out allegedly received some slaps. The Assemblyman for the area advised residents to avoid certain routes, and not less than 20 armed soldiers were reportedly seen on foot.

The Ghana Police and the Ghana Armed Forces are yet to comment on the incident, which received varied reactions over the weekend.
