Two individuals engaged in galamsey (illegal small-scale mining) lost their lives due to a collapse in a pit located in Konongo-Odumase, within the Asante Akim Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Initially, three illegal miners became trapped in the pit during the incident. While one managed to escape the disaster, unfortunately, the other two were unable to do so.
Authorities from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Municipality have confirmed that the pit collapsed while the illegal miners were inside, excavating gold deposits.
To recover the bodies from the pit, NADMO enlisted the assistance of a local excavator operator and members of the community.
The bodies have been transported to the morgue for further examination and identification.
Despite efforts by the authorities to curb illegal small-scale mining, such pit collapses remain a common occurrence in mining communities throughout Ghana.
