Sad: Headteacher and Assemblyman Drowns During Campaign - Tarkwa

In a tragic event that unfolded in Tarkwa, Western Region, Manasseh Addison Sackey, a 34-year-old headteacher and incumbent assemblyman, lost his life in an unexpected incident on Monday, December 4, while en route to campaign for re-election in the Teberebie electoral area. Known as Teacher Obour, Sackey met his untimely end by drowning in a river that connects Aklika, casting a somber shadow over the local electoral landscape.

Sackey, accompanied by a group of around five individuals for the campaign, disregarded warnings from his campaign team about the journey’s potential dangers. Despite being cautioned, he insisted that the distance was short and manageable for a quick return.

Tragically, in the midst of the river, the canoe carrying them capsized, resulting in the drowning of both Sackey and another individual. Three survivors from the incident returned to relay the tragic news. A search team was swiftly deployed, and Sackey’s lifeless body was recovered around 6:00 pm, approximately four hours after the incident occurred at 2:00 pm.

In an interview on Citi FM, Nana Esi Brew Monney, a journalist from Prestea FM, shared the heart-wrenching details. The chief of the area declined to comment, and efforts were underway to contact the municipal chief executive for further information.

The deceased’s body has been placed in the Tarkwa municipal mortuary. This unfortunate incident bears unfortunate similarities to a previous election season, where a former assembly member in the same constituency faced a similar tragic fate two weeks before elections four years ago.
