Students at Amedzikope Junior High School (JHS) in the Ketu South municipality of the Volta Region are receiving their education in the open due to the deteriorating condition of their classroom block, which poses a potential safety hazard.
The deteriorating structure is on the verge of collapse, evident from visible cracks in the walls that highlight a lack of maintenance or renovation since its initial construction.
This building, originally constructed by the community in the early 1990s, has progressively weakened over time, severely impacting the quality of teaching and learning at the school.
In a recent interview with Class News’ Volta Regional Correspondent on October 11, 2023, the local assembly member, Michael Hodedzi, expressed his frustration and raised concerns about the deteriorating building.
He recollected the promises made by local authorities in 2018, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Elliot Agbenorwu, to reconstruct the classroom block, promises that remain unfulfilled.
With the absence of suitable facilities for JHS One, Two, and Three students, these pupils have no choice but to pursue their education outdoors under the shelter of trees.
