Prempeh College emerged as the winners of the 2023 National Robotics Competition held in Accra.
They secured the top position with the highest score, earning the honor of representing Ghana in the upcoming World Robot Olympiad (WRO) scheduled for November in Panama.
Accompanying Prempeh College, five other teams from various categories, which are yet to be announced by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation (GRAF), will also represent the country.
Together, they will demonstrate the innovative spirit and technical prowess of Ghana on the international stage.
The National Robotics Competition was organized by the GRAF and Heritage Christian College (HCC) under the program called Robotics Inspired Science Education (RiSE).
The event brought together teams from various senior high schools (SHSs) and robotics clubs across the nation.
The competition served as a platform to showcase the exceptional talents and ingenuity of young minds who eagerly embraced the challenges posed by robotics and its applications in science and technology.
Among the participating schools were Our Lady of Grace Senior High School, Apam SHS, Achimota School, Starters Technology, Adenta Science Club, MIKROBOT Academy, and 15 other teams from different robotics clubs.
RiSE was established in 2011 by GRAF with the aim of nurturing problem-solvers among children and enabling them to apply what they learn in school, inspiring and empowering the next generation of Ghanaians in robotics.
Dr. Yaw Okraku-Yirenkyi, the Country Director of RiSE and Director of Studies at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre, stressed the importance of teaching practical skills alongside science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
Soft skills such as patience, focus, and positive attitudes are vital in making children successful in their endeavors.
Alexander Ekow Asmah, the Head of Department for Business and Innovation at HCC, highlighted the significance of robotics in everyday life, especially in a technologically driven world.
He urged parents and guardians to monitor and guide their children in the responsible use of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), which has become an integral part of modern life.
The Provost of Heritage Christian College, Prof. Williams Atuilik, expressed delight in witnessing the remarkable display of talent and passion exhibited by the participants during the competition.
