OSP Conducts Searches at Cecilia Dapaah's Home

On Monday, July 24, the Office of the Special Prosecutor conducted raids on the residences of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.

The raids were in connection with allegations that large sums of money and valuable items, totaling US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana cedis, were stolen from her home between July and October 2022 by her house helps.

Earlier that day, Ms. Dapaah was taken in for questioning on suspicion of corruption and was subsequently placed under arrest for several hours. The Office of the Special Prosecutor issued a statement confirming her arrest at 11:55 GMT on July 24, 2023.

Media reports had emerged on Friday regarding two housemaids, Patience Botwe (18 years old) and Sarah Agyei (30 years old), who were accused of stealing the significant amounts of money and items from the Minister’s residence, along with others who are also facing trial.

The stolen items allegedly included clothes, handbags, perfumes, jewelry, kente cloth, and suits belonging to Mrs. Dapaah’s husband, which were said to be worth thousands of dollars.

Following the publication of these reports, Cecilia Dapaah faced widespread criticism. However, she has questioned the accuracy of the reported stolen amounts, citing “noticeable inconsistencies” in the discussions of what she had reported to the police.

Amidst the controversy surrounding the alleged theft, Cecilia Dapaah took the decision to resign from her position as Sanitation Minister on Saturday, July 2022.
