The Chief Executive of the Northern Development Authority (NDA), Sulley Sambian, has revealed that his organization has successfully carried out 181 projects in the North East Region.
Sambian made this announcement during an inspection of several ongoing projects. Out of the 181 projects, 99 have already been completed, and the purpose of the visit was to inspect the progress and mobilize resources for the remaining projects.
The Northern Development Authority is responsible for implementing projects valued at approximately GH¢266.7 million in Northern Ghana as part of the government’s Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Program (IPEP).
In 2017, this initiative created over 2,000 long-term projects and 15,000 short-term programs. While some of the projects have been completed, others are nearing completion.
After the tour, Mr. Sambian spoke to journalists and expressed his frustration with the lack of communication regarding the positive work carried out by the NDA over the years. He stated, “We have many positive stories to tell, but unfortunately, we haven’t been telling these stories.
So when I took over, I decided that there was a need for us to share our achievements with the Ghanaian people. If you’ve been awarded the construction of 181 projects and have completed 99, at least 50 percent of the job is done. But I’m not sure many people are aware of this.”
During the inspection, Mr. Sambian visited a warehouse project aimed at addressing post-harvest losses in the area. He called on Ghanaians to support the NDA and acknowledged that the organization had faced some public criticism, but efforts were being made to restore trust.
Mr. Sambian mentioned that the NDA was collaborating with local chiefs and other stakeholders to bring development to the region. The District Chief Executive of Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri, Joseph Luoknaan, highlighted some completed projects, including school blocks, dams, boreholes, and warehouses. He also appealed to the NDA to intervene and encourage contractors who had abandoned their projects to return to the sites.
Furthermore, Mr. Luoknaan requested the establishment of an AstroTurf sports field for the area, mentioning that the local chiefs had already designated land for the project.
Earlier, the team paid a courtesy visit to the North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, who expressed confidence in the NDA’s ability to fulfill its mandate if provided with the necessary resources.
