NIA has enough cards to cover all eligible Ghanaian voters - Dep. Majority Chief Whip

According to Habib Iddrisu, the Deputy Majority Chief Whip, there are enough cards available to register all eligible Ghanaian voters, as stated by the National Identification Authority’s boss, Prof Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah. Prof Attafuah mentioned that there are 3.5 million cards in the custom bonded warehouse, which could be printed within six months, ensuring that the 2.5 million people remaining to be captured will be covered. Habib Iddrisu also mentioned that the government is committed to helping NIA release the cards, which were delayed due to financial issues.

This discussion arose due to the Electoral Commission’s proposed Constitutional Instrument (C.I) that suggests the use of the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration. The C.I also requires individuals to register at an EC district office, which has been opposed by the Minority.

Haruna Iddrisu, the former Minority Leader, argued that the EC has violated the Constitution by not holding limited registration exercises since 2021, denying some citizens the opportunity to enroll as voters. He believes that this is unacceptable for a country committed to multiparty constitutional democracy and has urged the EC not to lay its new Constitutional Instrument in Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has demanded that the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, appear before the House to address the controversial proposed Constitutional Instrument.
