Mahama commends Nigeria’s INEC, raises doubts about the methods used by the EC.

NDC will scrap payment of ex gratia – Mahama

During a pre-election tour of Nigeria as part of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, expressed concerns about the administration of elections in his home country. He remarked that he was impressed with the confidence that all candidates and parties in Nigeria have in the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), which takes their concerns into account. In contrast, he lamented that the same could not be said for Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), which he believes used to be one of the top election administration organizations in the world.

Mahama specifically criticized what he called “hostility” from the EC and other Commissioners towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and expressed a wish that the EC could inspire the same level of confidence in all parties as the INEC does in Nigeria. However, he believes that this wish is unlikely to be fulfilled due to the EC’s rejection of all efforts by the National Peace Council to organize a meeting between the Commission and the two major political parties, the NDC and the NPP.

As the head of the WAEF, Mahama is committed to ensuring a peaceful election in Nigeria as the country prepares to elect a new president. The Forum includes former leaders from across the sub-region, such as former President of Nigeria Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former Beninese President Boni Yayi, former Vice President of the Gambia Fatoumata Tambajang, former Burkinabe Prime Minister and President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Kadre Ouedraogo, and Dr. Erastus Mwencha, former Deputy Chair of the African Union (AU). Mahama is expected to be present for both the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections and the March 11, 2023, state elections.
