Greater Accra Labour Unions Persist with Planned Protest Despite Temporary VAT Suspension

On February 7, 2024, the Ministry of Finance directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to temporarily halt the implementation of the new 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity pending discussions with stakeholders, including Organised Labour.

However, the Greater Accra Regional branch of Organised Labour, a part of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), remains resolute in its decision to proceed with the planned protest, rejecting the suspension as inadequate. They demand a complete repeal of the tax.

Patrick Binyemi, a representative from the regional metro council of labour, announced during a press conference in Accra their intention to hold a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

The protest will involve various activities, including the suspension of commercial vehicle operations on the day. Binyemi outlined the route for the demonstration, starting at 6:30 am from the Obra Spot, Circle, and proceeding through several key locations before culminating at Independence Square or the Black Stars Square.
