The President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, has made an earnest plea to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging him to consider offering higher salaries to teachers in the country as a means to prevent the ongoing exodus of education professionals.

Rev. Owusu emphasized that the key to retaining teachers and encouraging them to continue serving the nation lies in providing them with improved financial incentives.

He further noted that if the President heeds this call and increases teachers’ salaries, it will lead to more educators choosing to stay in the country and contribute to its development.

During his address at the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize event held in Takoradi, Western Region, Rev. Isaac Owusu made this statement. The Ghana Teacher Prize, now in its 6th year, was rebranded in 2018 from the Best Teacher Awards.

Prior to this, the Ghanaian Times newspaper had reported an impending exodus of teachers to the United Kingdom, with 10,000 teachers being certified to work abroad.
