A new train recently acquired from Poland by Ghana for the Tema-Mpakadan railway line encountered an accident during a test run within the Asuogyaman District. The Ministry of Railways Development issued a statement providing details of the incident, which occurred around 12:10 pm on Thursday, April 18.
According to the Ministry, as the train approached a curve at Km76+100, it encountered a stationary vehicle obstructing the railway track, resulting in the accident. Despite activating the emergency braking system immediately, the train was unable to halt completely before colliding with the vehicle.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities, with passengers, drivers, crew members, and bystanders all escaping unharmed. It’s noteworthy that the vehicle was unmanned, and the location of the obstruction was not designated as an authorized level crossing. While there were no injuries to passengers or bystanders, there was minor damage to the driver’s cab section of the train.
The Ministry promptly reported the incident to the Police, who are currently investigating to determine the circumstances. The damaged DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) involved has been relocated to the Workshop for thorough assessment and necessary repairs.
