Contrary to some reports, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has made it clear that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for junior high schools is not being cancelled.
During a stakeholder engagement on the grading system organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director General of GES, clarified the situation for the public. He emphasized, “We are not cancelling the BECE.”
Dr. Nkansah explained that the confusion arises from the transition from the old objectives-based curriculum to the standards-based curriculum.
However, this transition does not mean that students following the standards-based curriculum will not take the BECE. He stated, “They will also write, but there might be changes in the nature and format.”
Dr. Nkansah urged everyone not to spread the misconception that the BECE is being abolished. He emphasized that the examination will continue to be administered, albeit with possible alterations.
