The drowning of nine children in Faanaa, an island community in the Greater Accra Region, has been attributed to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) by the African Education Watch.
According to the education think tank, the incident could have been prevented if the two institutions had provided life jackets to the pupils, as recommended after previous similar incidents.
The children drowned on May 10, while returning from school. Out of the twelve people on board, nine lost their lives, while three managed to swim to safety.
The Education Ministry and GES have been criticized for failing to provide life jackets to pupils and teachers in island communities.
The African Education Watch has called on the relevant authorities to ensure the provision of life jackets to students and teachers, strengthen health and safety compliance, construct schools in island communities, and provide parliamentary oversight on the matter.
