Establish Vocational Schools in Northern Region not hostel for Kayayei in Accra, The GaDangme Council has urges Govt

The GaDangme Council has recommended that the government should focus on establishing vocational and technical training institutions in northern Ghana to provide business skills to young people, particularly young women who migrate to the national capital for menial jobs.

This approach, according to the council, is a better alternative to the proposed construction of a hostel for female head porters in Accra, which would encourage more unskilled youth to migrate southwards.

The council has urged the government not to proceed with the hostel project but instead return the land earmarked for it to its owners in accordance with constitutional provisions on land acquisition and usage. The council believes that the provision of vocational and technical skills within the regions where young people migrate from is the safest solution to the challenges confronting those who migrate to cities, particularly Accra. This way, the migrants, having acquired skills, can go into local industries and apply their vocational and technical skills to run their small-scale businesses instead of moving south for non-existent jobs.

The council also expressed concern that the Constitution and other laws have been used to vest GaDangme lands in government for management and compulsory acquisition, but the injunction that where the land is not used for the purpose for which it was acquired, it should be returned to its original owners, is more honored in its breach than the observance. The council proposed that the land in question be handed over to the Greater-Accra Regional Lands Commission to be held in trust and with the collaboration of the composite Ga, Gbese and Korle Stools and James Town Stool and the GaDangme Council for the same to be parceled out to deserving indigenes to use to provide accommodation for themselves.
