Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), clarified that final-year students in the free senior high school (SHS) program are not required to pay the GH¢465 registration fee for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He emphasized that the government has absorbed these fees, alleviating the financial burden on students under the free SHS policy. Dr. Nkansah addressed misconceptions regarding the payment of registration fees during a press conference in Accra, debunking rumors that all final-year SHS students were obligated to pay.
He highlighted, “All students in government secondary schools under the Free SHS programme are not required to pay any registration fees because it has been absorbed by the programme.”
Dr. Nkansah also urged headmasters of SHSs to refrain from pressuring SHS Three students, currently on vacation, to return to school prematurely to complete their registration forms.
Acknowledging the logistical challenges posed by students’ varying locations during the holiday period, he assured that ample time would be provided for registration, which is scheduled to conclude on April 19, 2024, after students resume school on April 17. Dr. Nkansah underscored the collaboration between GES and WAEC to facilitate a smooth registration process.
Expressing appreciation, Dr. Nkansah commended the three teacher unions for calling off their strike, which had commenced on March 20. He recognized their decision as constructive, fostering an environment conducive to continued negotiations.
Dr. Nkansah welcomed the opportunity for further dialogue to address the unions’ concerns, acknowledging the importance of collective cooperation in the education sector.
