Direct Your Campaign Focus Away from Me - Dr. John Kumah to Kennedy Agyapong

Dr. John Kumah, the Deputy Minister of Finance, has advised Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, a potential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to remain focused on his campaign objectives and avoid making him (John Kumah) the central subject of his campaign efforts.

Representing the Ejisu Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Kumah responded to recent statements made by Mr. Agyapong, in which he suggested that a certain “strategist” was targeted at the young minister.

In a concise message posted on Facebook on August 16, 2023, Dr. Kumah conveyed his standpoint: “Maintain your focus, keep your attention on the primary goal. Continue strategizing for victory in 2024.”

Dr. Kumah emphasized his own dedication to the strategic aims for the upcoming 2024 elections while subtly reminding Mr. Agyapong to prioritize the fundamental elements of his campaign rather than singling out individuals for undue attention.

This interaction underscores the ongoing dynamics within the NPP as various figures vie for leadership positions while striving to uphold the party’s unity and vision.

In a recent interview, Mr. Agyapong clarified that his earlier mention of a “strategist” was not aimed at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr. Agyapong stated on TV3 that he intended to dispel any misinterpretations surrounding the context of his statement.

Previously, Mr. Agyapong had criticized the government’s management of the local currency, expressing concerns about the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi’s value.

He highlighted that within the period of March to August 2022, the value of $40 million in cedi equivalent had declined to $16 million due to the cedi’s devaluation against major global currencies, particularly the US dollar.

Although Mr. Agyapong refrained from mentioning specific names in his initial comments, his remarks were often linked to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia heads the Economic Management Team and is also a contender for the NPP flagbearer position, frequently facing criticism for the cedi’s decline against key international currencies.

During his campaign tour in Kintampo East on July 16, Mr. Agyapong addressed the matter, alluding to a “strategist” and the cedi’s depreciation. While not explicitly naming anyone, his remarks generated discussions about the cedi’s performance and its implications.
