Deactivation Tonight: More than 7.4 Million Unregistered SIM Cards to be Rendered Inactive

The National Communication Authority (NCA) will deactivate over 7.4 million SIM cards that have not been linked to the owner’s Ghana Card by midnight.

This includes SIM cards that have only completed one stage of the registration process and those that have not been linked at all.

As a result, these 7.4 million SIM cards will lose the ability to make phone calls, send SMS, or engage in any financial transactions.

Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Telecommunications, clarified that individuals with legitimate claims can contact the NCA.

The NCA will review their cases and instruct the telecommunications companies to whitelist their numbers, preventing them from being blocked.

Dr. Ashigbey also assured that the funds in the mobile money wallets associated with these numbers will be safeguarded by the Bank of Ghana. Owners can reclaim their funds through the appropriate channels.

In the meantime, the National Identification Authority (NIA) reported a successful registration of over 17 million Ghanaians, with plans to capture an additional 2 million within the next three months, pending the release of necessary funds for its operations.

Amidst a sense of urgency among citizens striving to obtain their Ghana cards before the deadline, Prof. Ken Attafuah, the Chief Executive of the NIA, confirmed that once sufficient funding is provided, the Authority aims to complete the registration process for all Ghanaians aged 15 and above within a maximum of three months.
