Cape Coast Technical Institute: A Legacy of Technical Education and Skill Development

Cape Coast Technical Institute was founded in 1955 by the late Joseph Kadesh Abraham, along with ten students and two teachers.

Initially known as the College of Architecture, it later changed its name to the Electrical Institute. In the early 1970s, the school relocated from Savoy Hill to Aquarium and eventually settled in its current location in Abura.

The institute’s association with Mr. Vercruise, a Building Engineer from the Royal Netherlands attached to the University of Cape Coast, played a significant role in its development.

Mr. Vercruise, through his servant Mr. Amongrey, who was a student at the school at the time, became interested in Cape Coast Technical Institute.

He sought to include the institute in the development budget of the Netherlands, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands contributed 75 percent of the funding while Mr. Abraham provided the remaining 25 percent.

The Netherlands Organization for International Assistance (NOVIB) oversaw the program.

Several pioneering tutors were instrumental in sustaining the institute’s vision, including Mr. Vercruise Fynn in the Building Department, Mr. Amongrey in the Electricals Department, Mr. John Kingsford Baidoo in Administration, Mr. Anthony Abraham in the Quantity Surveying Department, Mr. Francis Abraham in the Electricals Department, Mr. Appiah and Mr. Agbo in the Building Department, and Mr. Mensah Williams in the Auto Department.

The foundation stone of the school was laid by Mr. C.B. Arriens of the Netherlands on April 26, 1975.

In 1976, the government took over the institute from its founder and officially named it Cape Coast Technical Institute.

Over the years, dedicated principals have contributed to the institute’s significant milestones.

These principals include Mr. Joseph K. Abraham (1955-1975), Mr. Seth E. Yoyowah (1975-1980), Mr. Isaac K. Donkor (1980-1986), Mr. Anthony E. Essilfie (1986-1990), Mr. Mohammed O. Essuon (1990-2005), Mr. Henry E. K. Lyall (2006-2014), Mr. Albert Adusei (2014-2020), and Mr. John L. Ayansu (2021 to date).
