BECE 2024: 3 Teachers and 2 Invigilators Arrested for Alleged Examination Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken the decision to cancel the entire results of 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates who participated in the recently concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). These results were nullified due to various suspected offences.

Specifically, the subject results of some candidates were cancelled for offenses such as bringing foreign materials, including “prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.” Additionally, WAEC cancelled the entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall. The subject results of 180 school candidates and 4 private candidates have been withheld due to “various suspected offences.”

Furthermore, the subject results of 312 school candidates were cancelled for bringing foreign materials in the just-ended examination. The Council also cancelled the subject results of 3 private candidates for the same offense.

Simultaneously, WAEC is currently scrutinizing the scripts of 22,270 candidates in certain subjects due to reported “cases of mass cheating.” The outcomes of these investigations will determine whether their results will be cancelled or released.
