Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia criticized the Ghana Revenue Authority for its passive reliance on existing taxpayers for revenue generation, neglecting the larger segment of non-taxpayers.
Addressing the 57th Congregation at KNUST on November 24, 2023, Dr. Bawumia suggested leveraging the Ghana Card and TIN number linkage to identify tax filers, emphasizing the importance of tapping into this rich data.
He expressed disapproval of the GRA’s current strategy, deeming it “lazy” to continually seek taxes from those already paying, instead advocating a shift towards the vast majority of non-taxpayers.
Dr. Bawumia urged the GRA to prioritize efforts towards this untapped demographic to enhance tax collection.
To motivate tax collectors, he recommended introducing bonuses for each new taxpayer they enlist.
Despite recent efforts by the GRA to close down tax-defaulting companies, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of focusing on expanding the taxpayer base for increased revenue mobilization.
